| III. ASR Entry Level Rules |
| Part A: OBEDIENCE EXERCISES - 70 Points |
| 1. Heel on Leash Part A - 15 points: This exercise consists of two circuits in a clockwise direction around a triangle shaped course defined by standard traffic cones. Each leg is traveled at a normal walking pace. Only ONE command of action is permitted at the start of the exercise. During each leg, the Team will halt completely at a designated spot as instructed by the Evaluator. Upon the signal from the Evaluator, the Team shall continue to the next leg of the course. During each stop, the dog must remain in the heel position and motionless. Prior to the start of the exercise, the handler will inform the Evaluator on which side the dog will heel (right side or left side acceptable), and what position the dog will assume upon each halt. Point deductions will be made for forging, lagging, tight leash, and failure to take position on the halts. |
2. Heel on Leash Part B - 15 points: In Part B, the Team will travel the same circuit as in Part A. Each leg of the circuit will be traveled at a different pace (normal, slow, fast), as directed by the Evaluator. There are no halts in Part B. Only ONE command of action is permitted at the start of the exercise. The dog may heel on the right side or the left side. Point deductions as listed above.
NOTE: Both healing exercises MUST be performed ON LEASH. |
| 3. Down /Stay Handler out of Sight 1 minute - 20 points: At the direction of the Evaluator, the handler will place the dog in a down at a location determined by the Evaluator and command the dog to stay. Upon the Evaluator's signal, the handler will walk to a position of concealment. After 1 minute elapses (from the time the handler is concealed), the Evaluator will authorize the handler to return to the dog. At the Evaluator's signal, the handler will command the dog to heel and will proceed to the next exercise. The dog must maintain the down position until the handler's command to heel. A six foot or shorter leash may be left on the dog for the duration of the exercise. |
| 4. Recall - 20 points: At the direction of the Evaluator, the handler will place the dog in a Sit/Stay or Down/Stay at a location determined by the Evaluator and walk to a predetermined position approximately fifteen yards in front of the dog. Upon the signal from the Evaluator, the handler will command the dog to return and Sit in front of or to the side of the handler. The dog must respond quickly upon hearing the command. A six foot or shorter leash may be left on the dog during the duration of this exercise. |
| Part B: Protection Exercises - 100 Points |
| 1. Apprehension of Threatening Decoy with Gunfire - 30 points: In a manner described by the Evaluator, the Team will proceed to a pre-designated location with the dog ON Leash. The Evaluator will instruct the decoy to make his/her presence known by approaching within 10 feet of the Team. The handler may restrain the dog with the leash while the decoy threatens the Team with a .22 Revolver. The decoy will then move quickly to a designated location approximately 100 feet from the Team, then turn and face the Team and fire 1 shot from the revolver. The decoy will then assume a stationary, two-handed shooting stance. At the signal from the Evaluator, the handler will command the dog to apprehend the decoy. The decoy will remain motionless until the dog crosses the 'Entry Line' (approximately 1 yard in front of the decoy) and commits to bite. The decoy will then properly and safely absorb the impact of the dog. The decoy will oppose the dog for a period of approximately 3 seconds. At the Evaluator's signal, the handler shall command the dog to release the decoy. The handler may either command the dog to return from, or to GUARD the decoy.
o If the handler chooses to recall the dog away from the decoy, the handler MUST remain at the original release point until the dog returns and the Team is released by the Evaluator, ending the exercise.
o If the handler chooses to command the dog to release and guard the decoy, the handler MUST remain at the original release point until released by the Evaluator to collect the dog. Upon reaching the dog and decoy, the Evaluator will signal the handler to either leash the dog or heel the dog away from the decoy, ending the exercise. |
| 2. Protection of Handler - Civil Test - 20 points: For this exercise, the dog shall be double-collared with a sturdy agitation-type collar and a standard chain-type collar for safety reasons. A very sturdy 6 foot leash is also required. The Evaluator will inspect the leash and collars prior to the start of this exercise. Upon direction from the Evaluator, the handler will proceed to a predetermined location marked by a straight line (the First Line). The handler SHALL NOT CROSS this line for the duration of the exercise. A Second Line is marked approximately six feet in front of the first line. The dog SHALL NOT CROSS this line for the duration of the exercise. These lines are clearly marked for SAFETY PURPOSES. At the Evaluator's direction, the handler shall proceed to the First Line and place the dog on Alert. The Evaluator will then signal the Decoy (dressed in normal street clothes) to begin the approach. The Decoy shall approach the Team in a very threatening manner holding a pre-determined object of opposition (PVC pipe insulation, baton, etc.). The handler will allow the dog to SLOWLY, and under restraint of the leash, approach the Second Line. The handler should warn the decoy that the dog WILL BITE if the decoy does not cease the threatening display. The decoy will threaten the Team for approximately 10 seconds, at which time the Evaluator will signal the end of the exercise, and the handler will bring the dog back across the First Line to the original starting position. During the exercise, the dog should display strong aggressive behavior and a pronounced willingness to engage the unsuited decoy. |
| 3. Protection of Handler BITESUIT - 20 pts:. This exercise will begin exactly the same as the previous exercise, except the decoy will be wearing a bitesuit. At the signal from the Evaluator, the decoy shall proceed directly towards the handler in an attempt to strike him/her with the object of opposition. The handler will command the dog to apprehend the decoy the moment the decoy has stepped past the first line and the dog must bite before the owner is assaulted. For this exercise, it is required that the handler hold the dog by the collar and release the dog immediately after giving the apprehension command, letting the slack out of the leash when the decoy crosses the first marker line. The dog must engage immediately, without hesitation for the duration of the fight. The fight shall not exceed five seconds, and the decoy may strike the dog 1 time on the back or shoulders. The Evaluator will signal the handler to call the dog OUT and return to his side, or OUT GUARD.
o If the handler chooses to recall the dog from the decoy, the handler MUST remain at the original release point until the dog returns and the Team is released by the Evaluator, ending the exercise.
o If the handler chooses to command the dog to guard the decoy, the handler MUST remain at the original attack point until released by the Evaluator to collect the dog. Upon reaching the dog and decoy, the Evaluator will signal the handler to either leash the dog or heel the dog away from the decoy, ending the exercise.
o Should the dog fail to engage, the decoy shall strike the handler a maximum of three times with the object of opposition, at which time the Evaluator shall call a halt to the exercise. |
| 4. Defense of Handler from a Down/Stay - 30 points: At the direction from the Evaluator, the handler will place the dog in a Down/Stay position at a pre-designated location. The Evaluator will direct the handler to the marked location approximately fifteen yards in front of and facing the dog. Upon the Evaluator's signal, the decoy will directly approach and attack the handler with an object of opposition. The dog should immediately, and without additional command, come to the defense of the handler and subdue the attacking decoy. The decoy shall oppose the dog for approximately 3 seconds, during which time the decoy shall strike the dog ONE forceful blow on the back or shoulders with the object of opposition.
At the Evaluator's signal, the handler shall command the dog to release the decoy. The handler may either command the dog to return from, or to GUARD the decoy.
o If the handler chooses to recall the dog from the decoy, the handler MUST remain at the original release point until the dog returns and the Team is released by the Evaluator, ending the exercise.
o If the handler chooses to command the dog to guard the decoy, the handler MUST remain at the original attack point until released by the Evaluator to collect the dog. Upon reaching the dog and decoy, the Evaluator will signal the handler to either leash the dog or heel the dog away from the decoy, ending the exercise. |
