| IV. ASR Level 1 Exercises |
Part A: OBEDIENCE EXERCISES - 55 Points
|
| 1) Heel off Leash Part A - 15 points: This exercise consists of two circuits in a clockwise direction around a triangle shaped course defined by standard traffic cones. Each leg is traveled at a normal walking pace. Only ONE command of action is permitted at the start of the exercise. During each leg, the Team will halt completely at a designated spot as instructed by the Evaluator. Upon the signal from the Evaluator, the Team shall continue to the next leg of the course. During each stop, the dog must remain in the heel position and motionless. Prior to the start of the exercise, the handler will inform the Evaluator on which side the dog will heel (right side or left side acceptable), and what position the dog will assume upon each halt. Point deductions will be made for forging, lagging, tight leash, and failure to take position on the halts. |
| 2) Heel off Leash Part B - 15 points: In Part B, the Team will travel the same circuit as in Part A. Each leg of the circuit will be traveled at a different pace (normal, slow, fast), as directed by the Evaluator. There are no halts in Part B. Only ONE command of action is permitted at the start of the exercise. The dog may heel on the right side or the left side. Point deductions as listed above. |
| 3) Down /Stay Handler out of Sight 3 minutes - 15 points: At the direction of the Evaluator, the handler will place the dog in a Down/Stay at a location determined by the Evaluator, and command the dog to Stay. Upon the Evaluator's signal, the handler will walk to a position of concealment. After 3 minutes elapse (from the time the handler is concealed), the Evaluator will authorize the handler to return to the dog. At the Evaluator's signal, the handler will command the dog to heel and will proceed to the next exercise. The dog must maintain the down position until the handler's command to heel. |
4) Retrieve of a Thrown Article - 10 points: NOTE: The Retrieve exercise in ASR is a test of the natural retrieve drive, and not necessarily that of a formally trained or forced retrieve. The retrieve article may be of a variety of non-harmful items such as a plastic water bottle, a length of PVC pipe, or a length of garden hose. The Evaluator shall approve the retrieve article prior to the start of the exercise.
At the direction of the Evaluator, the handler will place the dog in a Heel (sit/down/or stand position) and command the dog to Stay at a designated location. The handler will then be directed to throw the retrieve article approximately 20 feet forward of the Team (or as directed by the Evaluator). Upon the Evaluator's signal, the dog shall be commanded to retrieve the article and return handler. The dog should retrieve the thrown article quickly, with a positive attitude and without undue delay, but need not present the article in a formal, 'show-style' fashion. The handler shall take the article from the dog and show it to the Evaluator. The Evaluator shall then signal the end of the exercise. |
| Part B: Protection Exercises - 245 Points |
1) Apprehension of a Running Decoy with Gunfire - 20 points: In a manner described by the Evaluator, the Team will proceed to a pre-designated location with the dog ON Leash. The Evaluator will instruct the decoy to make his/her presence known by approaching within 20 feet of the Team. The handler may restrain the dog with the leash/collar while the decoy threatens the Team with a revolver. The decoy will turn and attempt to flee from the team. At the signal from the Evaluator, the handler will command the dog to apprehend the decoy. The decoy will continue to flee, firing 1 shot from the revolver after the dog has been released. Once the dog has crossed the "Entry" point, the decoy will then fire another shot, properly and safely absorb the impact of the dog. Once the dog has apprehended the decoy, the decoy will oppose the dog for a period of approximately 7 seconds, firing 1 shot from the revolver after approximately 3 seconds of opposition. At the Evaluator's signal, the handler shall command the dog to release the decoy. The handler may either command the dog to return from, or to GUARD the decoy. Three shots fired.
o If the handler chooses to recall the dog from the decoy, the handler MUST remain at the original release point until the dog returns and the Team is released by the Evaluator, ending the exercise.
o If the handler chooses to command the dog to guard the decoy, the handler MUST remain at the original release point until released by the Evaluator to collect the dog. Upon reaching the dog and decoy, the Evaluator will signal the handler to either leash the dog or heel the dog away from the decoy, ending the exercise.
NOTE: Decoy must remain still after handler has given the command to release and must remain still until dog has returned to the handler. This is required for all ASR 1 protection exercises. |
2) Downfield Attack with Object of Opposition - 30 points: In a manner described by the Evaluator, the Team will proceed to a pre-designated location with the dog on leash. The Evaluator will instruct the decoy to approach within 20 feet of the Team. The decoy will then threaten the Team with an object of opposition selected by the Evaluator. The handler may restrain the dog with the leash/collar. The decoy will then run down field to an area pre-designated by the Evaluator, at which time the decoy will turn and face the Team and continue to threaten. At the signal from the Evaluator, the handler will release the dog and command it to apprehend the decoy. The decoy will continue to threaten the dog with the object of opposition in an attempt to intimidate the dog and prevent it from pressing home its attack. Once the dog has crossed the 'Entry Point' (approximately 1-2 yards from the decoy), the decoy will pull the object from the dog's path and safely absorb the impact of the dog. The decoy will oppose the dog physically, and with the object of opposition for approximately 8 seconds. At the signal from the Evaluator, the handler will command the dog to release the decoy. The handler may either command the dog to return from, or to GUARD the decoy.
o If the handler chooses to recall the dog from the decoy, the handler MUST remain at the original release point until the dog returns and the Team is released by the Evaluator, ending the exercise.
o If the handler chooses to command the dog to guard the decoy, the handler MUST remain at the original release point until released by the Evaluator to collect the dog. Upon reaching the dog and Decoy, the Evaluator will signal the handler to either leash the dog, or heel the dog away from the decoy, ending the exercise.
o The Evaluator may choose one of several objects which the decoy may use to oppose the dog during the exercise. These objects include, but are not limited to, tree branches, palm fronds, a bamboo baton, PVC pipe insulation, a cardboard box, or plastic containers filled with coins or pebbles. The decoy may touch the dog with any of the objects, but in the case of the PVC pipe insulation, palm fronds, or bamboo baton, the decoy will strike the dog (reasonably) during the opposition. |
3) Handler Defense from a Vehicle - 30 points: Upon direction from the Evaluator, the handler will place the dog into a pre-designated vehicle. When the dog is in the vehicle, the handler will command the dog to STAY in vehicle. The dog may sit, down or stand in the vehicle. It is not considered to be faulty if the dog changes position to gain a better view of the handler during the exercise. The Evaluator will direct the handler to step away from the vehicle and face the dog from a distance of approximately 30 feet. Upon the signal from the Evaluator, the decoy will attack the Handler with an object of opposition--PVC pipe insulation. At this time, the dog must quickly come to the aid of the handler and subdue the attacking decoy. The decoy shall oppose the dog for approximately 8 seconds. At the signal of the Evaluator, the handler shall command the dog to release the decoy.
Upon reaching the dog and decoy, the Evaluator will signal the handler to either leash the dog or heel the dog away from the decoy, ending the exercise. |
4) Apprehension of Threatening Decoy with Gunfire - 20 points: In a manner described by the Evaluator, the Team will proceed to a pre-designated location with the dog ON Leash. The Evaluator will instruct the decoy to make his/her presence known by approaching within 10 feet of the Team. The handler may restrain the dog with the leash while the decoy threatens the Team with a revolver. The decoy will then move quickly to a designated location approximately 100 feet from the Team. The decoy will then assume a stationary, two-handed shooting stance. At the signal from the Evaluator, the handler will command the dog to apprehend the decoy, at which time, the decoy will fire a single shot. The decoy will remain motionless until the dog crosses the 'Entry Point' (approximately 1 yard in front of the Suspect) and commits to bite. The decoy will then fire another shot, properly and safely absorb the impact of the dog. The decoy will fire a third shot after opposing the dog for a period of approximately 3 seconds. At the Evaluator's signal, the handler shall command the dog to release the decoy. The handler may either command the dog to return from, or to GUARD the decoy.
Three Shots Fired.
o If the handler chooses to recall the dog from the decoy, the handler MUST remain at the original release point until the dog returns and the Team is released by the Evaluator, ending the exercise.
o If the handler chooses to command the dog to release and guard the decoy, the handler MUST remain at the original release point until released by the Evaluator to collect the dog. Upon reaching the dog and decoy, the Evaluator will signal the handler to either leash the dog or heel the dog away from the Decoy, ending the exercise. |
5) Seated Defense of the Handler - 45 points: During this exercise the handler will be seated in a chair in a location pre-determined by the Evaluator. The dog must remain within one yard of the handler for the duration of the exercise, but does not necessarily have to remain in a fixed position. The decoy will make three approaches towards the handler, culminating in an attack on the handler at the end of the third approach. The dog is not to bite until the handler is attacked at the end of the third approach. On the first approach the decoy should appear intoxicated, aggressive, loud, and belligerent, but should not come closer than 6 feet from the seated handler or the dog. If the dog does not attack the decoy, the decoy will move away and pause briefly before approaching again. The second approach will be conducted as a normal person walking toward the handler. The handler and decoy will greet each other and shake hands and the decoy will leave, passing by the dog and handler. On the third approach the decoy will mill around behind the handler dog in an attempt to lull the dog into a complacent state. Within a reasonable time limit determined by the Evaluator, the decoy must make an obvious attack on the seated handler from behind and within five seconds of crossing the 6 ft. marker line located directly behind the seated handler, the dog must defend the handler by immediately biting the decoy. After a sufficient duration of the fight between the decoy and dog (approximately 8 seconds), the Evaluator will signal for the handler to command the dog to release the decoy.
Upon reaching the dog and decoy the Evaluator will signal the handler to either leash the dog or heel the dog away from the decoy, ending the exercise.
o The leash MUST be removed from the dog prior to the decoy's first approach. |
6) Muzzled Defense of Handler - 20 points: In a manner described by the Evaluator, the Team will proceed to a pre-designated location with the dog ON Leash. The Evaluator will instruct the handler to place an ASR-approved agitation muzzle on the dog. The muzzle will be tested for safety at this point. This will be accomplished by the handler pulling upward on the muzzle until the dog's front feet are lifted slightly off the ground. The Evaluator will also require that competing dogs wear a sturdy agitation collar and standard chain collar double-connected to a 10 foot line that has been pre-inspected by the Evaluator for sturdiness and safety. The handler must place his/her hand through the safety loop of the 10 foot line. The handler must place his/her hand through the safety loop of the 30 foot line. The handler shall restrain the dog by firmly grasping the collar with the free hand.
Immediately following the muzzle test, the unsuited decoy, armed with a length of PVC pipe insulation, will aggressively walk toward the handler and dog in the circle, in a threatening manner. As soon as the decoy is within a 10 ft. radius (length of the line), the handler will release the slack in the leash, commanding the dog to attack the unsuited decoy. The dog should immediately strike a powerful blow to the decoy at which time the decoy will step back and the exercise will end.
It is mandatory for the decoy to wear protective padding during this exercise to prevent injury. This exercise is not to show training in the muzzle, but to proof dogs for actual street encounters against hostile adversaries and test true handler defense and civil drive. |
7) Search for a Hostile Man in Woods - 30 points: The Team (with dog on leash) will begin at a location as indicated by the Evaluator. The decoy will then run or walk into view armed with an object of opposition. The handler will order the decoy to stop, but the decoy will continue on his way and disappear into a thicket of woods. The decoy will proceed to a location predetermined by the Evaluator and hide. Upon the signal of the Evaluator, the handler will send the dog to find and subdue the decoy. The decoy should remain silent and motionless until he is located by the dog, at which time the decoy should attack the dog strongly, and must yell aggressively either before or after the dog bites. The dog should engage the decoy aggressively, and should continue to fight the decoy until the handler and Evaluator arrive. Upon the arrival of the handler and Evaluator, the Evaluator will signal the handler to command the dog to release the decoy.
Upon reaching the dog and decoy, the Evaluator will signal the handler to either leash the dog or heel the dog away from the decoy, thus ending the exercise. |
8) Building Search - 30pts: Upon direction of the Evaluator, the handler will walk the dog ON LEASH to a pre-designated location. At this time, the decoy will walk into view and then the Handler will command the decoy to "HALT!, or I'll send my dog," at which time the Decoy will run into a building approximately 60 feet away from the Team. When the Evaluator signals, the handler will command the decoy to "COME OUT, or I WILL SEND MY DOG!" The decoy refuses to do this. The Evaluator then signals the handler to release his dog. The dog must quickly enter the building, find and subdue the hostile decoy, after which the handler and Evaluator will enter the building. When the dog makes contact with the decoy and is engaged in a fight, the decoy will yell loudly at the dog and strike the dog 3 times with the object of opposition (PVC pipe insulation). Upon arriving at the location of the dog and decoy, the Evaluator will signal the handler to command the dog to release the decoy.
Upon reaching the dog and decoy, the Evaluator will signal the handler to either leash the dog or heel the dog away from the decoy, ending the exercise. |
| Evaluation of Bite Quality - 20 Points Maximum: An additional 20 points has been added to the aggregate score of 280 to make the maximum 300 points. These 20 points will be determined by the Evaluator on observation of the biting quality of the dog. The frontal or very shallow biter will receive 0 points. A bite with less than ½ mouth consistently receives 10 or less points. Biting with ½ mouth consistently will receive 15 points. Biting with ½ or more mouth and readjusting to full mouth bite consistently will receive the maximum of 20 points. |
