| V. ASR Level 2 Rules |
Part A: OBEDIENCE EXERCISES - 70 Points
|
| 1) Heel off Leash Part A - 15 points: This exercise consists of two circuits in a clockwise direction around a triangle shaped course defined by standard traffic cones. Each leg is traveled at a normal walking pace. Only ONE command of action is permitted at the start of the exercise. During each leg, the Team will halt completely at a designated spot as instructed by the Evaluator. Upon the signal from the Evaluator, the Team shall continue to the next leg of the course. During each stop, the dog must remain in the heel position and motionless. Prior to the start of the exercise, the handler will inform the Evaluator on which side the dog will heel (right side or left side acceptable) and what position the dog will assume upon each halt. Point deductions will be made for forging, lagging, tight leash, failure to take position on the halts. Additionally, food will be scattered randomly through out the heeling pattern. |
| 2) Heel off Leash Part B - 15 points: In Part B, the Team will travel the same circuit as in Part A. Each leg of the circuit will be traveled at a different pace (normal, slow, fast), as directed by the Evaluator. There are no halts in Part B. Only ONE command of action is permitted at the start of the exercise. The dog may heel on the right side or the left side. Point deductions as listed above. Additionally, food will be scattered randomly through out the heeling pattern. |
3) Down /Stay Handler out of Sight 3 minutes --20 points: At the direction of the Evaluator, the handler will place the dog in a down at a location determined by the Evaluator, and command the dog to stay. Upon the Evaluator's signal, the handler will walk to a position of concealment. After 3 minutes elapse (from the time the handler is concealed) the Evaluator will authorize the handler to return to the dog. At the Evaluator's signal, the handler will command the dog to heel, and will proceed to the next exercise. The dog must maintain the down position until the handler's command to heel. Additionally, food will be scattered randomly about the down/stay area.
NOTE: Should the dog eat or lick the food in the above exercises, the Team will receive zero points for the exercise. |
| 4) Retrieve of a Standard Article from Brush or Tall Grass Article - 10 points: NOTE: The Retrieve exercise in ASR is a test of the natural retrieve drive, and not necessarily that of a formally trained or forced retrieve. The standard object will be provided by the Evaluator on the day of the trial and will be the same for all dogs participating. The object may be a variety of non-harmful objects such as plastic water bottle, PVC pipe, eyeglass case, etc. At the direction of the Evaluator, the handler will place the dog in Heel position and command the dog to Stay at a designated location. The handler will then be directed to throw the retrieve article approximately 20 feet forward of the Team (or as directed by the Evaluator) into the brush or tall grass. Upon the Evaluator's signal, the dog shall be commanded to retrieve the article and return handler. The dog should retrieve the thrown article quickly, with a positive attitude and without undue delay, but need not present the article in a formal, 'show-style' fashion. The handler shall take the article from the dog and show it to the Evaluator. The Evaluator shall then signal the end of the exercise. |
| Part B: |
1) Apprehension of a Running Decoy with Gunfire - Guard and Transport - 50 points: In a manner described by the Evaluator, the handler will proceed to a pre-designated location in the vicinity of the vehicle on the field. At the direction of the Evaluator, the decoy shall approach to within 30 ft of the dog/handler team in a threatening manner. The handler shall command the decoy to halt his approach, at which point the decoy shall turn down field and attempt to flee. The handler shall command the decoy to halt. Upon a signal from the Evaluator, the handler shall release the dog to apprehend the fleeing decoy. The decoy shall fire two shots from a revolver prior to the dog biting. Once the dog bites, the decoy shall fire two additional shots during the duration of the fight. FOUR SHOTS
Upon the signal from the Evaluator, the handler shall command the dog to OUT and GUARD. The handler shall then approach the decoy. Upon reaching the decoy, the handler shall have 20 seconds to place the dog in a 'safe' position within 8 feet of the decoy, disarm the decoy, and conduct a search for additional weapons. The handler will then transport the decoy to the vehicle. During the transport, the decoy will make (at a minimum) two 90 degree turns (one to the left, and one to the right, returning to the original path). The handler and dog MUST remain within an 8 foot perimeter of the decoy during the transport portion of the exercise. Upon reaching the vehicle, the handler shall command the decoy to HALT and place his hands upon the vehicle. Upon the signal from the Evaluator, the Handler shall heel the dog away, and the exercise shall end.
Escape/Re-Attack: At some point during the exercise, the decoy shall either attempt to escape from, or re-attack the handler. When the decoy has ESCAPED or RE-ATTACKED, the dog must IMMEDIATELY re-engage and subdue the decoy. At the Evaluator's signal, the handler will OUT/GUARD the dog and continue with the exercise as described above.
NOTE: The time and manner of the Escape/Re-Attack shall be decided upon by the Evaluator on the day of the trial, and made known only to the participating decoy. This Escape/Re-attack may occur AT ANY TIME after the initial OUT/GUARD of the decoy until the exercise has ended (i.e., during the approach of the handler, disarming, search, or transport of the decoy, or at the vehicle). The manner of the Escape/Re-attack shall be the same for all participants.
NOTE: Due to the close proximity of the handler, decoy, and dog, at NO TIME shall the handler place himself/herself between the dog and the decoy
NOTE: Special attention will be paid to the vigilance and control of the dog during this exercise. Re-biting or lack of vigilance during the GUARD or TRANSPORT portions of the exercise will be severely penalized. During the ESCAPE / REATTACK the dog must re-engage the decoy in a timely manner. Point deductions will also be acquired for failure to maintain the 8 foot perimeter during the guard/transport portions and for extra commands during placement of the dog prior to the Search of the decoy. |
2) Downfield Attack with Object of Opposition over Obstacle - 30 points: In a manner described by the Evaluator, the Team will proceed to a pre-designated location with the dog on leash. The Evaluator will instruct the decoy to a position behind a natural barrier.
The decoy will then threaten the Team with an object of opposition. The handler may restrain the dog with the leash/collar. At the signal from the Evaluator, the handler will release the dog and command it to apprehend the decoy. The decoy will continue to threaten the dog with the object of opposition in an attempt to intimidate the dog and prevent it from pressing home its attack. The dog must jump the barrier in order to apprehend the decoy.
Once the dog has crossed the 'Entry Point' (approximately 1-2 yards from the decoy), the decoy will pull the object from the dog's path and safely absorb the impact of the dog. Should the dog detour around the barrier, the decoy will attempt to hold the dog off with the object of opposition and by intimidation.
Once the dog bites, the decoy will oppose the dog physically and with the object of opposition for approximately 7-10 seconds. At the signal from the Evaluator, the handler will command the dog to release the decoy. The handler may either command the dog to return from, or to GUARD the decoy.
o If the handler chooses to recall the dog from the decoy, the handler MUST remain at the original release point until the dog returns and the Team is released by the Evaluator, ending the exercise.
o If the handler chooses to command the dog to guard the decoy, the handler MUST remain at the original release point until released by the Evaluator to collect the dog. Upon reaching the dog and decoy the Evaluator will signal the handler to either leash the dog, or heel the dog away from the decoy, ending the exercise.
o The Evaluator may choose one of several objects which the decoy may use to oppose the dog during the exercise. These objects include, but are not limited to, tree branches, palm fronds, a bamboo baton, PVC pipe insulation, a cardboard box, or plastic containers filled with coins or pebbles. The decoy may touch the dog with any of the objects, but in the case of the PVC pipe insulation, palm fronds, or bamboo baton, the decoy will strike the dog (reasonably) during the opposition.
NOTE: The barrier used in this exercise must be realistic in nature. It may be no more than 3 feet high nor more than 10 feet wide. It must not be a 'fixed' barrier, such as a wall or fence so as to prevent injury to the dog. Examples of acceptable barriers include, but are not limited to: Hay bales, fifty-five gallon drums turned on the side, or cardboard boxes. The intended barrier must be approved by the Evaluator prior to the start of the trial. |
3) Anti-Carjacking with Hidden Sleeve - 30 points: Upon direction from the Evaluator, the handler will place the dog into a pre-designated vehicle. When the dog is in the vehicle, the handler will command the dog to STAY in vehicle. The dog may sit, down or stand in the vehicle. The dog will remain ON LEASH throughout the duration of this exercise, and the Evaluator will specify any additional safety requirements necessary, depending on the nature of the vehicle used.
Upon the signal from the Evaluator, an unsuited decoy will approach the vehicle wearing a hidden sleeve under a suitable covering garment. As the decoy approaches, the handler will command the dog to an alert posture. The decoy shall walk normally, without verbal exchange, and attempt to reach into the vehicle in the vicinity of the dog, or as specified by the Evaluator. The dog must show a strong, aggressive reaction, and engage the decoy when within range. The handler will command the dog to release the decoy in a manner prescribed PRIOR to the start of the exercise.
NOTE: A severe penalty will be issued, at the Evaluator's discretion, if the handler allows the dog to exit the vehicle AT ANY TIME during the duration of the exercise.
NOTE: Only Verbal Commands are allowed during this exercise. No whistles may be used due to the intended realistic nature of the exercise. |
4) Muzzled Attack on Gunman at 30 feet - 30 points: In a manner described by the Evaluator, the Team will proceed to a pre-designated location with the dog ON LEASH. The Evaluator will instruct the handler to place an ASR-approved agitation muzzle on the dog. The muzzle will be tested for safety at this point. This will be accomplished by the handler pulling upward on the muzzle until the dog's front feet are lifted slightly off the ground. The unsuited decoy MUST conduct the safety test prior to continuing the exercise. The Evaluator will also require that competing dogs wear a sturdy agitation collar and standard chain collar double-connected to a 30 foot line that has been pre-inspected by the Evaluator for sturdiness and safety. The handler must place his/her hand through the safety loop of the 30 foot line. The handler shall restrain the dog by firmly grasping the collar with the free hand.
NOTE: There will be a suited decoy within site and range of the dog during this exercise.
Upon the signal from the Evaluator, the unsuited decoy will fire a single shot from a distance of 30 feet from the Team. The handler will release the dog and command him/her to subdue the unsuited decoy. The dog must respond immediately and strike a powerful blow to the unsuited decoy, at which time the exercise shall end, and the handler shall regain control of the dog.
It is mandatory for the decoy to wear protective padding during this exercise to prevent injury. This exercise is not to show training in the muzzle, but to proof dogs for actual street encounters against hostile adversaries and to test handler defense and civil drive. |
5) Seated Defense of the Handler - 60 points: During this exercise the Handler will be seated in a chair in a location pre-determined by the Evaluator. The dog must remain within one meter for the duration of the exercise, but does not necessarily have to remain in a fixed position. The decoy will make three approaches towards the handler, culminating in an attack on the handler at the end of the third approach.
The dog is not to bite until the handler is attacked at the end of the third approach. On the first approach the decoy should appear intoxicated, aggressive, loud, and belligerent, but should not come closer than six feet from the seated handler or the dog. If the dog does not attack the decoy, the decoy will move away and pause briefly before approaching again. The second approach will be conducted with the decoy acting as a normal person walking toward the handler. The handler and decoy will greet each other and shake hands, and the decoy will leave, passing by the dog and handler. On the third approach the decoy will mill around behind the handler and dog in an attempt to lull the dog into a complacent state. Within a reasonable time limit determined by the Evaluator, the decoy must make an obvious attack on the seated handler from behind and within five seconds of crossing the six foot marker line located directly behind the seated handler. In response to the attack, the dog must defend the handler by immediately biting the decoy.
After a sufficient duration of the fight between the decoy and dog (approximately 10 seconds), the Evaluator will signal for the Second decoy to attack the handler. The handler must command the dog to release the first decoy and redirect its attention to the second decoy. After a sufficient duration of the fight between the decoy and dog (approximately 10 seconds), the Evaluator will signal for the handler to command the dog to release the second decoy.
Upon reaching the dog and decoy, the Evaluator will signal the handler to either leash the dog or heel the dog away from the decoy, ending the exercise. |
6) Downfield Attack with Water Opposition - 30 points: In a manner described by the Evaluator, the handler will proceed to a pre-designated location with the dog. The decoy will proceed to an area predetermined by the Evaluator and pick up either a bucket of water or water hose-water source to be predetermined by the Evaluator.
The Evaluator will then signal the handler to release the dog. The decoy will remain motionless until the dog comes within range of the water, at which time he will spray the dog with the water hose or douse the dog with the contents of the bucket. The period of opposition will not exceed 10 seconds. At the signal of the Evaluator, the handler will command the dog to release the decoy.
Upon reaching the dog and decoy, the Evaluator will signal the handler to either leash the dog or heel the dog away from the decoy, ending the exercise. |
7) Search for a Hostile Man in Woods - 30 points: The Team (with dog on leash) will begin at a location as indicated by the Evaluator. The decoy will then run or walk into view, armed with a blank revolver. The handler will order the decoy to stop, but the decoy will continue on his way and disappear into a thicket of woods. The decoy will proceed to a location predetermined by the Evaluator and hide. Upon the signal of the Evaluator, the handler will send the dog to find and subdue the decoy. The decoy should remain silent and motionless until he is located by the dog, at which time the Decoy should attack the dog strongly, firing the revolver once before the dog bites. A second and third shot will be fired after approximately 3 seconds of opposition. The dog should engage the decoy aggressively, and should continue to fight the decoy until the handler and Evaluator arrive. Upon the arrival of the handler and Evaluator, the Evaluator will signal the handler to command the dog to release the decoy. The handler may either command the dog to return from, or to GUARD the decoy.
THREE SHOTS FIRED.
o If the handler chooses to recall the dog from the decoy, the handler MUST remain at the original release point until the dog returns and the Team is released by the Evaluator, ending the exercise.
o If the handler chooses to command the dog to guard the decoy, the handler MUST remain at the original release point until released by the Evaluator to collect the dog. Upon reaching the dog and decoy the Evaluator will signal the handler to either leash the dog or heel the dog away from the decoy, ending the exercise.
NOTE: The search time shall be limited to 3 minutes or as specified by the Evaluator. |
8) Building Search - 30pts: Upon direction of the Evaluator, the handler will walk the dog ON LEASH to a predetermined location. At this time, the decoy will walk into view and then the Handler will command the decoy to "HALT, or I'll send my dog," at which time the decoy will run into a building approximately 60 feet away from the Team.
When the Evaluator signals, the handler will command the decoy to "COME OUT, or I WILL SEND MY DOG!" The decoy does not comply. The Evaluator then signals the handler to release his dog. The dog must quickly enter the building and find and subdue the hostile decoy. When the dog makes contact with the decoy, the decoy will oppose the dog and fire one shot from a revolver. The decoy will fire one additional shot after opposing the dog for approximately 3 seconds. Upon arriving at the location of the dog and decoy, the Evaluator will signal the handler to command the dog to release the decoy. The handler may either command the dog to return from, or to GUARD the decoy. TWO SHOTS
o If the handler chooses to recall the dog from the decoy, the handler MUST remain at the original release point until the dog returns and the Team is released by the Evaluator, ending the exercise.
o If the handler chooses to command the dog to guard the decoy, the handler MUST remain at the original release point until released by the Evaluator to collect the dog. Upon reaching the dog and decoy, the Evaluator will signal the handler to either leash the dog or heel the dog away from the decoy, ending the exercise. |
9) Out/Guard or Recall added to a Biting Exercise - 10 points: Prior to the start of the exercises, the Evaluator shall inform the handlers of this additional requirement. During one of the biting exercises, the handler shall be required to:
- A dog that is trained to normally perform an Out/Guard at the decoy will be required to Out/Recall from the decoy.
- A dog that is trained to normally Out/Recall from the decoy shall be required to Out/Guard at the decoy
Evaluation of Bite Quality - 20 Points Maximum: An additional 20 points has been added to the aggregate score of 380 to make the maximum 400 points. These 20 points will be determined by the Evaluator on observation of the biting quality of the dog. Frontal or very shallow biters will receive 0 points. Less than ½ mouth consistently receive 10 or less points. Biting with ½ mouth consistently will receive 15 points. Biting with ½ or more mouth and readjusting to full mouth bite consistently will receive the maximum of 20 points.
